Lane Breaks Hand, Out Three Weeks

LOS ANGELES - Senior lefthanded pitcher/first baseman Jason Lane of the USC baseball team, the defending national champions and the preseason No. 1 team, broke his left thumb in practice over the weekend.
It is the second key injury of the preseason for the Trojans, who lost shortstop Seth Davidson for approximately six weeks when he broke his jaw in practice on Jan. 8.
Lane injured the thumb in practice on Saturday (Jan. 23) when he crashed into the wall chasing a foul ball. X-rays taken on Monday (Jan. 25) confirmed that he had broken the thumb. He is expected to miss about three weeks.
Lane batted .332 with 14 home runs and 50 RBI as a 1998 junior, and went 9-2 with a 5.34 ERA as one of USC's top relief pitchers. He set College World Series records for hits (15) and total bases (31) and made the All-CWS team last spring. Last month, he was named a preseason All-American second teamer by Collegiate Baseball.
USC's season opener is on Feb. 2 at 3 p.m. against Cal State Dominguez Hills at Dedeaux Field.
