LOS ANGELES - Head coach Mike Gillespie earned his 500th career victory at USC as the No. 25 Trojan baseball team routed San Diego State, 13-0, on Tuesday evening at Dedeaux Field. The contest also marked the 25th anniversary of the first- ever game at Dedeaux Field.
USC improved to 17-16, while San Diego State fell to 15-18.
"I don't think much about these things, but 500 is better than 50," said Gillespie, who is now 500-283-2 in 13 seasons at USC. "This is an important win and an impressive performance. Everyone who pitched did well and the defense made some spectacular plays."
Five Trojan pitchers, led by starting sophomore RHP Rik Currier (3-4), combined to three-hit the Aztecs. Currier went five innings and gave up two hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
Senior LF Jason Lane hit a two-run home run in the top of the first, and senior RF Greg Hanoian slugged a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to help the Trojans to a 7-0 lead after two innings. Hanoian finished with a 3-for-4 effort.
Sophomore SS Seth Davidson had a two-run double in the third inning, senior 2B Dominic Correa knocked a three-run home run in the sixth inning and freshman C Beau Craig lined an RBI double in the eighth inning to round out the scoring.
The Trojans played their third straight game without junior C Eric Munson, who suffered a bruised right hand when he was struck by a foul tip on Saturday (March 27) at Washington State. Due to numerous injuries, USC has only had its complete lineup intact for 13 of 33 games.
USC next meets Cal State Northridge for a three-game series (April 1-3) that begins on Thursday.
