Baseball Takes Two against Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State lost twice to Southern California in Pacific-10 baseball on Sunday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU fell 12-10 in 10 innings in the completion of a suspended game from Saturday, then lost 4-1 as USC completed a sweep of the three-game series. OSU (9-13 overall, 0-3 Pacific-10) is now scheduled to play host to Portland in a non-league game at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, then travel to Yakima, Wash., to face Washington State in a non-league three-game series on Friday and Saturday. USC (11-13, 3-0) returns home to meet Cal Lutheran at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Arizona in a three-game series next Friday through Sunday.
In the completion of a game suspended due to rain and darkness after nine innings Saturday afternoon, it took just one inning for the Trojans to take the win.
OSU pitcher B.R. Cook walked Dominic Correa to start the 10th inning, and he scored when Carlos Casillas doubled down the left-field line. Pinch runner Brandon Mugavero was sacrificed to third, then scored on Seth Davidson's squeeze bunt to make it 12-10.
Jason Lane, who had been pitching for USC when the game was suspended on Saturday, returned to the mound and retired the Beavers in order in the bottom of the 10th to wrap up the victory.
In Sunday's regularly-scheduled game, OSU jumped to a 1-0 lead when Joe Gerber led off the bottom of the second with a home run to left field. But that was one of just three hits allowed by USC pitcher Justin Lehr, as he struck out a career-high 14 in the complete-game victory. USC gave Lehr a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth. Eric Munson tied the score with a one-out solo homer to right-center. Jason Lane then walked, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Brad Ticehurst and scored on a squeeze bunt by Dominic Correa.
Cook, who took his turn in the starting rotation in the second game for the Beavers, was tagged with his second loss of the day. He limited the Trojans to three runs on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings, but once again found little support from OSU's lineup. In his last five starts, Cook has pitched a total of 38 1/3 innings and OSU has scored just five runs during those innings.
Southern California added another run on Greg Hanoian's leadoff homer to left in the eighth inning. The Trojans tacked on their final run in the top of the ninth when Correa walked, was sacrificed to second and scored on Beau Craig's double.
