LOS ANGELES - Senior RF Greg Hanoian had a total of eight runs batted in to help the No. 25 USC baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Cal State Northridge, 17-9 and 7-6, in non-conference play at Dedeaux Field on Friday.
The Trojans improved to 19-16 overall while the Matadors fell to 20-22.
With the Trojans leading the first game, 12-4, in the bottom of the third inning, the Matadors had a scary moment. USC senior 2B Dominic Correa's line drive up the middle struck CSUN senior RHP Andrew Sanchez in the head. The game was delayed for an hour and 10 minutes while paramedics attended to Sanchez, who was conscious the entire time. He was taken to County-USC Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a concussion and was slated to be held overnight for observation.
Junior LHP Barry Zito (6-2) went five innings for USC, struck out eight and gave up four hits, three walks and four runs. Hanoian had three hits and four RBI and junior 3B Justin Gemoll and freshman C Beau Craig both had three hits for the Trojans.
In the second game, USC built a 4-0 lead after two innings, due largely to a three-run home run by Hanoian in the second inning. He later had a sacrifice fly, followed by a two-run single by senior CF Brad Ticehurst to give the Trojans a 7-3 lead after seven innings.
But USC's defense faltered in the eighth, and the Matadors scored three unearned runs to make it a one-run game. CSUN then put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the ninth before sophomore RHP Rik Currier struck out the final two batters for his second save.
The two teams play the finale of this three-game series on Saturday (April 3) at CSUN's Matador Field at 1 p.m.
