MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 22 USC baseball team managed only two hits against No. 5 Pepperdine and lost, 6-4, in Malibu on Wednesday afternoon.
The Trojans, who were held to their fewest hits since only getting two in a 1995 contest against Pepperdine, fell to 14-15 overall, while the Waves improved to 24-3.
USC scored first in the top of the fifth inning without the benefit of a hit. Freshman 2B Beau Craig walked with one out and moved to second with another walk. Junior 1B Justin Gemoll then hit into a fielder's choice that was nearly a double play. But Gemoll was called safe at first, the first baseman hesitated and Craig scored all the way from second base. Pepperdine then tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom half of the frame.
USC made it 3-1 in the top of the sixth. Senior RF Greg Hanoian led off with a single, junior C Eric Munson walked, senior LF Jason Lane flew out, moving both runners up a base, and senior CF Brad Ticehurst lined a two-RBI single into center field.
But the Waves came back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to grab a 6-3 lead. Sophomore C Dane Sardinha hit a two-run home run and junior 2B Damon Katz hit a three-run home run.
The Trojans added another run in the top of the seventh, again without the benefit of a hit. Craig and senior DH Justin Lehr both walked and advanced a base with a groundout, and sophomore SS Seth Davidson had a sacrifice fly.
Sophomore RHP Rik Currier (2-4) started and took the loss, going five innings with five strikeouts and giving up six hits, three walks and five runs.
USC visits Washington State for three Pacific-10 Conference games this weekend (March 26- 28).
