LOS ANGELES - Senior 1B Jason Lane went 4-for-5 with two RBI to lead the USC baseball team to an 11-7 non- conference victory over Michigan at Dedeaux Field on Wednesday night.
The Trojans (6-11) and the Wolverines (3-2) had only met once previously, a USC win in the 1978 College World Series.
Sophomore LHP Steve Smyth (4-3) started for the Trojans and went five strong innings, giving up four hits, one walk and one run while striking out six.
In the meantime, the Trojans sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs to take a 5-1 lead. Lane, junior LF Justin Gemoll and sophomore CF Josh Self all had RBI singles.
The Wolverines rallied a few times, but couldn't quite catch up. Michigan senior RF Jason Alcaraz hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to cut USC's lead to 7-5.
Then, USC scored four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 11-5. Senior RF Greg Hanoian and Lane both had RBI doubles, and freshman 3B Beau Craig lined a two-run double down the right-field line.
Michigan made things interesting in the top of the ninth, though, scoring twice on an RBI single by Alcaraz and an RBI double by sophomore C David Parrish. With two runners on and one out, USC sophomore RHP Rik Currier entered the game and struck out the final two batters to record his first career save.
Parrish went 3-for-5 and Alcaraz went 2-for-5 with three RBI for Michigan. Hanoian, Gemoll and freshman SS Seth Davidson all had two hits for the Trojans.
USC next visits UCLA this weekend (March 5-7) for three non-conference games.
