Tucscon, Ariz. - The USC men's and women's swim teams lost in their first dual meets of the 1999-2000 season against Arizona in Tucson, the Trojans falling 124-119 and the Women of Troy losing, 148-93.
The men's squad, ranked No. 5 against the No. 4 Wildcats, had a chance to win the meet in the final relay, but Arizona's 400y freestyle relay edged USC's unit of freshman Jeff Lee, junior Philippe Demers, senior Bret Awbrey and junior Gabe Woodward, 2:58.93 to 3:00.24.
The men's team did win six of nine individual events and were paced by freshman Erik Vendt, who took home wins in the 500y free (4:20.88) and the 1000y free (8:55.41), the latter time the second-fastest mark ever swum by a Trojan.
Other winners included sophomore Nick Kaschik in the 200y IM (1:50.91), Woodward in the 100y free (45.16), junior Leonardo Costa in the 200y backstroke (1:46.96) and junior Slawek Richter in the 200y breaststroke. In addition to finishing second in the 400y free relay, USC also was second in the 400y medley relay as the unit of Costa, junior Ryosuke Imai, Demers and Awbery posted a 3:18.85, a season best but a second off of Arizona's time.
On the women's side, freshman Asa Sandlund, like Vendt, won both the 500y and 1000y freestyle, swimming 4:52.20 and 9:54.41, respectively. USC's other win came from fellow freshman Michala Kwasny, who posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 200y fly in 1:59.09.
USC's Sarah Farr won the 1-meter diving competition (232.00) and sophomore Kellie Brennan won the 3-meter event (451.75). For the men, sophomore Adam Rokoff had USC's highest finish, a third in the 1-meter (231.75).
USC faces Arizona State in Tempe on Saturday at 11 a.m.
