LOS ANGELES - The No. 10 USC women's soccer team scored two early goals and made it stand up in a 2-1 victory over Washington in a Pacific-10 Conference match on Friday afternoon in the Coliseum.
The Women of Troy improved to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-10, while the Huskies fell to 4-7, 1-1.
USC's first goal came not long after the opening whistle. After a foul was called at the top of the penalty box, junior midfielder Andrea Warner (Dana Point/Dana Hills HS) slid the ball across the field to junior defender Megan Orach (Huntington Beach/Marina HS), who blasted a one-timer in from about 25 yards out in the second minute of play.
In the 11th minute, junior midfielder Isabelle Harvey (Quebec, Canada) ran a ball down into the left corner, then whipped a cross into the middle. Sophomore forward Christy Callier (San Diego/University City HS) headed it in for a 2-0 lead.
With the assist, Harvey, USC's career points leader, now has 99 points in her career and needs just one more to reach the century mark.
USC's defense stayed tight until late in the game. After taking only four first-half shots, the Huskies didn't taken any in the second half until the final 10 minutes. Washington got several shots off toward the end and finally, in the 88th minute, junior midfielder Theresa Wagner's sliding pass through the middle made it to an open sophomore forward Caroline Putz, who scored from 15 yards out.
For the match, USC outshot Washington, 20-8. The Huskies' defense improved over the final 80 minutes, largely due to the play of freshman goalkeeper Hope Solo, who made 10 saves.
"We played hard and it's great to be 3-0 in the Pac-10," USC Coach Jim Millinder said. "We still need to do a little better job of finishing our opportunities and putting teams away. Defensively, we did very well, though I hated to concede a late goal."
USC has its final home match of the season on Sunday (Oct. 17) against Washington State at 1 p.m. at the Coliseum.
