Kelly Dormandy enters her second season as USC's director of women’s basketball sports performance, having joined USC head coach Lindsay Gottlieb's support staff on June 16, 2023. Dormandy boasts a decorated resume of work with championship teams. While at USC previously, she helped see her Trojan teams win a 2014 Pac-12 women’s basketball championship, a NCAA soccer title in 2018 and two beach volleyball crowns in 2016 and 2017. And as head strength and conditioning coach for the LA Sparks, she experienced a 2016 WNBA Championship as well.
“With an opportunity to hire for the position of Director of Women’s Basketball Sports Performance, I sought to find and recruit the absolute best in the country. That is what we got with the hire of Kelly Dormandy, and I’m thrilled for our athletes and our program.” Gottlieb said. "Kelly is a game changer. She is a competitor, an innovator and a winner. She has helped to produce national and WNBA championship teams as well as having trained pros in various sports. At this key juncture of our program, her impact will be paramount. In bringing Kelly back to USC, we are giving our athletes the absolute best opportunity to reach their potential both at USC and beyond.”
Dormandy comes to USC after two seasons at Georgia women’s soccer’s strength and conditioning coach. Prior to that, Dormandy was associate athletics director for sports performance at Loyola Marymount from 2021-22 and had served as assistant athletics director for strength and conditioning for the Lions from 2018-21. While at LMU, Dormandy oversaw sports performance for baseball, volleyball, women’s basketball and golf.
From 2015-18, Dormandy was head strength and conditioning coach for the Los Angeles Sparks, winning a 2016 WNBA title during that stretch while working with MVPs Candace Parker and Nneka Ogwumike and Olympian Ana Dabovic.
“There couldn’t be a better person for the job,” WNBA MVP Parker said of Dormandy. "Kelly is extremely talented and would never ask anything of others she wouldn’t do herself. She’ll be a tremendous addition to the USC program.”
Dormandy’s previous time at USC had her working with women’s basketball as well as soccer and beach volleyball, winning the aforementioned championships in that 2012-18 run with the Trojans.
"First and foremost, I’d like to extend my sincerest appreciation to coach (Josh) Heidegger and coach Gottlieb for the opportunity to serve as director of sports performance for the USC women’s basketball program,” Dormandy said. "I’m grateful to be able to come back to a university that feels like home. More importantly, I’m excited to work with and impact the Women of Troy in our pursuit of greatness on and off the court. Fight on!"
Before joining USC in 2012, Dormandy worked as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at Springfield College while earning her master's degree in exercise science and sports studies with a concentration in strength and conditioning in 2010. During that span, she also logged more than 400 hours as a performance specialist intern at Athletes' Performance and Core Performance Center.
Dormandy played collegiate soccer at Maryland and Quinnipiac. When sidelined with a career-ending injury in 2006, Dormandy took her competitiveness to the fitness stage, placing first overall in women's bodybuilding in The Fitness Atlantic 2007 fitness extravaganza. She graduated from Quinnipiac in 2008 with a degree in business marketing.
Dormandy is a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and owns a USA Weightlifting (USAW) Level 1 certification. She is also trained in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator by the American Red Cross.
