ick Newman was named as the assistant coach of jumps and multi-events for the USC track and field program on July 23, 2019.
During the 2020 indoor season he guided Earnie Sears III to All-America honors and to setting the USC indoor high jump mark with a clearance of 7-6.50 (2.30m). He also helped Cassidy Palka high jump 5-11.25 (1.81m) in USC's one outdoor meet in 2020, which moved her to 10th on USC's all-time list. In addition, Jalyn Jackson posted the seventh-best indoor triple jump in school history of 52-4.
Newman was an assistant track & field coach at California for the previous three seasons, coaching 10 student-athletes to top 10 marks on Cal’s indoor and outdoor lists.  His last season was highlighted with Tuomas Kaukolahti earning his second consecutive Pac-12 men’s triple jump title and NCAA All-America status in the event both indoors and outdoors. He placed seventh at the NCAA Indoor Championships and eighth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Newman also guided Tyler Brendel to the 2019 MPSF conference title and to All-America status at the NCAA Indoor Championships as well as freshman Hakim McMorris to U-20 World No. 5 in the decathlon.
Newman led athletes to 13 conference podium finishes and seven NCAA All-American performances during his time at Cal. In 2011, he led triple jumper Blessing Ufodiama to a breakout season, as she became the No. 2 ranked jumper in the country, breaking the 14-meter barrier for the first time.
Newman has over 18 years of experience in training youth, collegiate and professional athletes from a wide array of sporting backgrounds. During his professional career, Newman specialized in the biomechanics of the sprints and jumps, speed development and long term program design.
As an author and educator, Newman published his first book, “The Horizontal Jumps: Planning for Long Term Development” in 2012 and has an extensive writing portfolio with contributions on several of the leading sports performance and coaching websites.
Newman earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science from Manhattan College in 2006 and a Master’s Degree in Human Performance & Sport Psychology from California State Fullerton in 2009. He holds certifications in Strength & Conditioning, Technical Coaching and Sport Performance from the U.S. Track and Field & Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and USA Weightlifting.
His personal athletic background includes competing as an international long jumper for England, logging a personal best of 25-7.00 (7.80m).
