John Bonney was named a defensive quality control analyst at USC in March of 2021.
He spent 2019 and 2020 as a graduate assistant at Texas Southern.
Bonney played cornerback and nickelback for 3 seasons (2015-17) at Texas, seeing action in every game. As a 2017 junior (he started twice), he had 19 tackles (including 4 versus USC), an interception (off of Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield), 2 fumble recoveries and 3 deflections. He started 7 games as a 2016 sophomore, getting 39 tackles, 9 deflections and a forced fumble. He had 29 tackles (2 for a loss, with a sack), a deflection and a forced fumble as a 2015 redshirt freshman backup. He was a 4-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and made the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 first team.
He spent 2018 as a graduate transfer at Texas Tech, appearing in all 12 games at safety and starting 8 times. He had 32 tackles, a deflection and 2 forced fumbles.
He was a 4-year starting safety at Lamar High in Houston (Tex.)
He earned his bachelor’s degree in corporate communications from Texas in 2018.
His father, Jerry, played basketball at Houston in the early 1970s. His brother, Joshua, played basketball at Elon.
