THIS YEAR: Junior Mikaela Smith begins her third season as a Trojan competing in the 800m. She ranks in USC’s top 10 in the 800m. She competes in cross country for the Trojans in the Fall.
2017: Smith set a 800m PR with a time of 2:05.17 to place second at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on April 30....that time moved her into seventh on USC's all-time list in the event. She set a 1500m PR with a time of 4:43.20 at the Aztec Invitational on March 24. She ran her first collegiate 400m race and placed third with a time of 55.65 at the Cal Collegiate on April 2. Smith placed eighth in the 800m finals at the Pac-12 Championships with a time of 2:12.67 and 16th at the NCAA West Prelims with a time of 2:09.06. She set her indoor 800m PR with a time of 2:05.94 to place second at the MPSF Championships on Feb. 25, helping the Trojans to the team title.
2016: Won the 800m with a then-PR of 2:06.66 at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on May 1. She then set a PR and ran the seventh-fastest time ever by a Trojan with a time of 2:05.33 in the Pac-12 Championship semifinals on May 14...She finished seventh in the finals on May 15 with a time of 2:07.88. She went on to run a time of 2:05.39 to take fourth at the USA Junior Championships on June 25.
HIGH SCHOOL: Smith graduated with the class of 2015 from Clovis North High School in Fresno, California. She was the 2013 and 2014 California State Champion in the 800m run with times of 2:08.39 and 2:06.85 respectively. She also had the second-fastest qualifying time for the finals in 2015, but tripped and was disqualified in the finals. Smith also won the CIF Central Section 800m title all three seasons in which she competed (2013-15) and won the CIF state indoor title in the 600m race with a time of 1:28.87 in 2013. She was the 2014 Fresno Bee Female Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
PERSONAL: Mikaela was born on July 4, 1997 in Fresno, CA...Her parents are Michael and Debbie Smith and she has one sibling, Tyler… Throughout High School she volunteered at her church and served as a bible study teacher ...At USC she is a Human Biology major in the Dornsife School of Letters, Arts and Sciences and is involved in the African American Student Union...Her favorite things to eat are Mexican food and Cinnabons…Her favorite musician is Drake...Would like to travel in the future....After USC she would like to compete in the Olympics and change people's lives as a doctor.
