The Wild Bunch ... Season Statistics
What a year it was for the Wild Bunch II.
In August, this webpage billed this foursome "College Football's Top Defensive Line."
The season has been completed and the evidence is overwhelming. The Wild Bunch II truly is "College Football's Top Defensive Line."
Consider:
- The Wild Bunch led a Trojan defense that finished first in the nation in rushing yards allowed per game (60.2) and in yards allowed per carry (1.84). Both figures are also USC school records.
- Two of the Wild Bunch were honored on All-American teams. End Kenechi Udeze was a consensus first team All-American while tackle Shaun Cody was an AP All-American third team selection.
- Three of the Wild Bunch Udeze, Cody and tackle Mike Patterson were named to the All-Pac-10 first team. In Pac-10 history, only Washington State in 1994 has had three first team all-conference selections on the defensive line.
- Three of the starting four linemen finished in double digits in tackles for loss. Omar Nazel, who missed four games with injury, finished with 6.5 tackles for loss, while his replacement Frostee Rucker had 4 tackles for loss, so it is quite likely that Nazel also would have finished in double digits if he had been healthy.
- USC's defensive line including reserves led all defensive lines in the nation in sacks (38.5) and tackles for loss (67).
- The Wild Bunch allowed only one 100-yard rusher all season and only one in the past 26 games. It shut down Michigan in the Rose Bowl, holding the Wolverines and All-American running back Chris Perry to just 49 net rushing yards.
- Udeze tied for the nation's lead in sacks with 16.5 and was third nationally with 26 tackles for loss. The 26 tackles for loss is second all time in USC history.
- The Wild Bunch was instrumental in helping USC to its first national championship since 1978.
Stay tuned....the Wild Bunch will be back with a vengeance in 2004....
