Baseball
Strong pitching performances helped USC win three of four games last week. Sophomore RHP Rik Currier went 7 2/3 innings and gave up one hit and one walk with 14 strikeouts in a 4-0 win over Cal Lutheran on Tuesday. Junior LHP Barry Zito then struck out 16 in seven innings for the second week in a 17-1 win over Arizona on Friday. The Wildcats took the second game, 9-4, but in the finale, senior RHP Justin Lehr survived a rocky to start to earn his second win. Junior C Eric Munson hit a go-ahead home run as USC won, 8-5.
Women's Swimming
Senior All-American Lindsay Benko posted USC's sole individual title at the 1999 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Georgia last weekend, leading the Women of Troy to a sixth-place finish overall. Benko won her third career title in the 500 free on Thursday in 4:40.22, a USC record. She also recorded third-place finishes in the 200 back and the 200 free. Fellow senior All-American Karen Campbell also had an excellent meet, taking third in the 50 free in a school-record 22.52, third in the 200 fly and fourth in the 100 fly. Campbell was part of four USC school records at the meet (50 free, 100 fly, 200 free relay, 400 medley relay). Freshman Kristin MacGregor also finalled in one event, taking third in the 100 breast. Her prelim time in the event of 1:00.66 was a school record.
Men's Tennis
The Trojans defeated Utah, 7-0, at Marks Tennis Stadium on Tuesday. Junior Patrick Gottesleben, freshman Andrew Park, sophomore Roman Kukal, sophomore Gregg Hill, freshman Nicolas Rainey and senior Scott Willinski all earned singles wins, while Rainey/Willinski and Park/Hill earned victories in the doubles competitions.
Women's Tennis
USC swept Oklahoma, 8-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium. Senior Ditta Huber, junior Kara Warkentin, junior Jacqui Boyd, junior Veronika Safarova, senior Karolina Bakalarova and freshman Krissy Hamilton-Heinberg earned singles victories. Doubles teams Huber/Warkentin and Bakalarova/Safarova earned doubles points for USC.
Men's and Women's Track & Field
On Saturday, both Trojan teams withdrew from the US Collegiate Track & Field Series Meet in San Luis Obispo due to rain, while various athletes competed at the Long Beach Classic.
Men's Volleyball
USC visited Fort Wayne, Indiana last week for the Spring Fling Tournament.
On Friday they defeated Ball Sate 3-2, then fell to Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne 3-1 on Saturday. Outside hitter Brook Billings totaled 60 kills and 26 digs for both matches as the Trojans moved to 10-8 on the season.
Women's Water Polo
Sophomore 2M Jennifer Durley scored a career-high four goals to lead USC to a 13-7 victory over Hawaii and a first place finish at the Rainbow Challenge last Saturday. The Women of Troy defeated Long Beach State, 13-2, on Friday and went on to defeat Hawaii, 10-5 and San Diego State, 12-5.
