USC Men’s Golf Surges into the Lead at the 79th Western Intercollegiate

Jack Buchanan broke the Western Intercollegiate tournament record with a 62 (-8) in round two.
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Highlighted by Jack Buchanan breaking the Pasatiempo Golf Club tournament record and tying the lowest round in program history, the USC Men's Golf team surged to the lead at the 79th Western Intercollegiate Presented by Tilteist on Tuesday, April 14.
Buchanan's 62 (-8) broke a 25-year-old tournament record and was one stroke off of tying the single-round course record at the par-70, 6,493-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course. Entering the day in a team tie for seventh, USC's 334 (-16) vaulted them into first place with a four-stroke lead on second-place California. USC's final round begins at 11:40 a.m. tomorrow, while coverage on the Golf Channel will begin at 4:00 p.m. PT.
In his record-breaking round, Buchanan had six birdies, two eagles and just two bogeys. After a bogey on No. 3, Buchanan finished off the front side with three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 No. 9 to move into the lead. He ran into trouble with a bogey early on the back side, but was able to bounce back with a birdie and another eagle on the par-5 No. 13. Buchanan then capped off the round with back-to-back birdies.
"I've been hitting the ball well and making a few putts," Buchanan said. "I didn't get off to the best of starts, but I hit a few iron shots close and made a few birdies. It was nice to make an eagle on the par-5 12, which was the highlight of the day."
His 62 not only shattered his collegiate-best round by four strokes, but also tied the best round in USC program history.
Fellow sophomore Jaden Dumdumaya moved into second place after firing a 65 (-5). Dumdumaya began the round with a birdie and a bogey, but knocked in a 50 yard wedge shot on the par-5 No. 6 for his second eagle of the tournament to him rolling for the day. on the par-5 No. 6. Dumdumaya finished the round with four birdies in the last six holes.
USC's third player in the top 20, graduate senior Luke Stock fired a 70 (E) to remain in a tie for 20th with a 139 (-1) total. Stock ran into trouble on the front side with a bogey and a double-bogey on the par-5 No. 6. Yet two of his four birdies came on the back side to get him back to level par for the day.
Moving up 18 places on day two, Nicolas Dominguez fired a 69 (-1) to move up to a tie for 35th with a 142 (+2). His lone bogey came on the front side and he made back-to-back birdies at the turn to finish under par.
Raghav Gulati is behind him in a tie for 62nd with a 147 (+7), while senior Antonio Safa is in a tie for 84th place with a 152 (+12).
