Jasmine Koo leads five Trojans in the top 10.
PHOENIX — The No. 2 USC Women's Golf team wasted no time shooting up to the top of the PING ASU Invitational leaderboard after the first round of play at Papago Golf Club on Monday, March 23.
The Trojans fired a 271 (-17) at the par-72, 6,570 track and hold an eight-stroke lead over second-place Baylor. Sophomore Jasmine Koo leads the field with a 66 (-6) after round one, while Elise Lee (T-2nd), Catherine Park (T-4th), Bailey Shoemaker (T-10th) and Kylie Chong (T-10th) give USC five Trojans in the top 10. USC is the only team with multiple players in the top 5.
USC has been in first place in its last Baylor (-9), Cal State Fullerton (-7), host team No. 23 Arizona State (-6) and No. 14 UCLA (-3) round out the top five teams. USC has been in first place in its last 10 rounds of play — a streak dating back to Feb. 14 at the Alice and John Wallace Women's Golf Classic. The Trojans are going for their fourth consecutive tournament win in the Copper State.
Leading from wire-to-wire, Jasmine Koo played a stellar first round of golf that featured seven birdies and an eagle on the par-5, 508-yard No. 15. Four of her birdies came on the front side, before playing 16 holes of bogey-free golf. She found trouble with a bogey and a double-bogey on her final two holes, but nevertheless, she tied her second-lowest round of the year with a 66 (-6).
Fellow sophomore Elise Lee played a bogey-free opening round with a collegiate-best 67 (-5). She had two birdies on the front side before kicking off the back side with three birdies in her first five holes. She is currently tied for second with UCLA's Jennifer Seo.
Senior Catherine Park bounced back from a bogey on the opening hole and had five birdies on the back side to move into a three-way tie for fourth with a 68 (-4). All told, she finished with six birdies and just two bogeys on Nos. 1 and 14.
Sophomore Kylie Chong and junior Bailey Shoemaker are in an eight-way tie for 10th with a 70 (-2). Chong was firmly in the top 10 throughout the day thanks to playing a bogey-free round for the first 16 holes before finding trouble on the last two holes. She had four birdies and just two bogeys on the day.
Shoemaker, meanwhile, found trouble on the front side with a pair of bogeys to just one birdie before recovering on the back side. The junior had two birdies and her second eagle of the season on the par-5, 508-yard No. 15 that helped her rise up the leaderboard. All told, she had three birdies, an eagle and three bogeys on Monday.
Competing as an individual, freshman Sarah Hammett is tied for 34th place with a +1 (73).
Round two starts tomorrow at 8:18 a.m. All pertinent updates can be found on the women's golf team's schedule page on usctrojans.com.
