USC Track and Field's Garrett Kaalund Shatters 200m Collegiate Record at NCAA Indoor Championships
March 14, 2026 | Track & Field
The Trojans closed out the indoor season with four Trojans earning First Team All-American honors
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The USC track and field team took the national stage by storm on Saturday to close out the NCAA Indoor Championships led by Garrett Kaalund with an NCAA and American record in the 200m.
The crowd roared as Kaalund came off the second curve of the final individual race of the day for the Trojans. The senior pulled away by a huge margin of .22 to secure the 200m national title. His time of 19.95 is the first ever sub-20 time run by a collegiate man indoors and breaks the previous record of 20.2 set by Elijah Hall-Thompson in 2018. Additionally, he recorded the second-fastest time in world history only .03 seconds behind the world record set by Frank Fredricks in 1996.
To add to the individual success, Madison Whyte earned national runner-up in the women's 400m. She fought back on the back stretch of the second lap to win her heat and take second overall in a new personal-record time of 50.68.
Dajaz DeFrand and Brianna Selby both earned First Team All-American status with their seventh (7.25) and eighth place (7.26) finishes, respectively, in the women's 60m. DeFrand also closed her final indoor season with eighth place in the women's 200m in 23.40.
Overall, the women's team finished in 20th place with 12 points and the men's team finished in 30th place with 10 points.
The Trojans now turn their focus towards outdoor season. The journey back to the national championship starts with the Ron and Sharlene Allice Trojan Invite on March 27 and 28 on Allyson Felix Field at Katherine B. Loker Track Stadium.
