Trojans improve to 4-0 and complete the sweep over the desert schools.
TUCSON, ARIZ. — No. 19 USC women's tennis earned a 5-2 victory over Arizona on Sunday, Jan. 20, using five singles wins to secure the match after the Wildcats claimed the doubles point. With the win, USC advances to 4-0 overall.
Arizona jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning two of three doubles matches. No. 51 Jana Hossam and Krisha Mahendran fell 6-4 on court two, while Emma Charney and Immi Haddad dropped a tightly contested 7-6 (8) decision on court three. No. 6 ranked Dani Borruel and Lily Fairclough kept the Trojans within reach with a 7-6 (9) win over Zoya Chulak and Ciara Moore on court one. The Trojans trailed by one entering individual competition.
USC responded decisively in singles play, winning five of six matches. Immi Haddad opened singles with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over Danielle Tuhten on court three to even the score. No. 16 Jana Hossam followed with a straight-set win on court two, defeating Ciara Moore 6-2, 6-4 to give the Women of Troy their first lead of the day.
No. 62 Eugenia Zozaya extended USC's advantage with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Maria Garcia on court five. No. 74 Krisha Mahendran then clinched the match on court four, rebounding from a second-set loss to defeat Josie Usereau 6-1, 5-7, 6-0.
Arizona picked up its second point on court six, where Tanvi Narendran edged Dani Borruel in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 5-2. No. 12 Emma Charney closed the match on court one with a three-set victory over Martyna Ostrzygalo, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
Next up, the Trojans head to Charlottesville, Virginia for ITA Kickoff Weekend, beginning Friday, Jan. 24.
