USC Beach Volleyball Alumna Geena Urango Wins AVP Denver Open Title

The Trojan beach great teamed with Avery Jackson to ascend the podium at The Island
AURORA, Colo. – USC beach volleyball alumna Geena Urango (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) paired with Avery Jackson to win the AVP Denver Open contender event at The Island on Sunday, July 6.

Recent USC grad Maya Gessner (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla HS) tied for third place with partner Jacinda Ramirez.Â

Urango and Jackson collected a pair of wins in pool play to move into the single-elimination bracket. They claimed a 21-19, 21-14 win over Hannah Frohling and Amanda Harnett in their first match and then took a decisive 21-14, 21-12 win over Katie Pyles and Lena Sokolowski in their second contest.

Urango-Jackson didn't drop a set until the championship match. As the second seed in the elimination bracket, they took down Megan Rice and Kendra VanSwieten in the opening round, 21-17, 21-19. They then ran into a pair of USC All-Americans and got a 21-19, 21-15 win over Ashley Pater (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS) and Madison White (Scottsdale, Ariz./ASU Preparatory Academy). Pater and White finished the tourney in a fifth-place tie.

In the semifinals, Urango and Jackson collected a 21-13, 21-19 win over Gessner and Ramirez to set up a title match with the top-seeded duo of Carly Kan and Devanne Sours. There, Urango-Jackson came back after dropping the first set to get a 15-21, 22-20, 15-11 win.Â

The Trojans (27-11) played their first season as a member of the MPSF in 2025 and finished as the runner-up to league champion Stanford in the inaugural tournament held in Huntington Beach, Calif. USC earned its ninth berth in the NCAA championship and was awarded the fifth seed. The Trojans defeated North Florida in the first round but fell to eventual national runner-up Loyola Marymount in the quarterfinals. USC was ranked sixth in the final AVCA coaches poll and produced the fifth consecutive 20-plus win season under head coach Dain Blanton. The Trojans added had four athletes chosen for AVCA All-American honors: Madison White and Zoey Henson (Cypress, Calif./Cypress HS) to the first team; Ashley Pater and Kennedy Coakley (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner HS) to the second team.
