The Women of Troy collected a 3-0 win over 12th-seeded North Florida in the first round of the NCAA championship

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The fifth-seeded USC beach volleyball team (27-10) claimed a 3-0 win over 12th-seed North Florida (26-11) in the first round of the NCAA championship in front of the Hangout at Gulf Shores Public Beach on Friday, May 2.

The win pushes the Women of Troy into the quarterfinals where they will face fourth-seeded Loyola Marymount (36-6) in a 9 a.m. CT (7 a.m. PT) dual on Saturday (May 3) that will be shown live on ESPN2.

The Trojans improved to 5-0 all-time against the Ospreys with the win. Three of the meetings between the teams have been on Gulf Shores sand in Alabama including last May in the first round of the 2024 NCAA championship. Overall, USC improves to 39-8 in the state of Alabama which includes a 32-4 mark in NCAA tournament duals; 18-0 under sixth-year head coach Dain Blanton.

USC scored its first dual point when junior Delaney Karl and graduate Ella Larkin completed a 21-15, 21-13 win over Eden Anderson and Hayden Woolridge at the No. 4 position. It was the fourth straight win for Karl-Larkin as the duo improved to 15-4 on the season.

Moments later, USC went in front, 2-0, as the Trojans' No. 1 pair of sophomore Zoey Henson and junior Madison White knocked off Cameron Humphries and Taylor Pierce by a 21-16, 21-19 count for their 23rd win of the season.

The clinching point came from the No. 2 position where freshman Kennedy Coakley and sophomore Ashley Pater finished off Mackenzie Murphy and Presley Murray in straight sets, 21-19, 21-16, to improve to 28-4 on the season.

USC pairs won first sets at all five spots, but play was stopped at the Nos. 3 and 5 positions when the dual was truncated. At court three, graduate Maya Gessner and junior Mabyn Thomas split sets with Madison Espy and Mariana Feliciano Sanchez. The Trojans won set one, 21-15, but the Osprey pair took set two, 21-17. At court five, sophomores Madison Goellner and Kaileigh Truslow claimed the first set over Andrea Da Silva and Sophia Notaro, 21-18 and were tied 17-all with the Ospreys in set two when the horn blew.

The Trojans won their 18th straight dual in Alabama and move into the NCAA quarterfinals for the fifth straight year.
