LOS ANGELES – No. 16 USC women's tennis came up short on Wednesday afternoon, falling 4-2 to crosstown rival No. 19 UCLA at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Trojans struggled in doubles play, dropping the early point after losses on courts one and two. On center court, the No. 6 ranked pair of Olivia Center and Kate Fakih beat USC's Jana Hossam and Sloane Morra 6-2. The Bruins claimed the doubles point as the No. 18 ranked pair of Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle downed USC's No. 10 ranked pair of Lily Fairclough and Grace Piper 6-4.
USC managed to put two points on the board in singles play, but it wouldn't be enough to overtake the Bruins. Trojan senior No. 71 Grace Piper downed No. 26 ranked Anne Christine Lutkemeyer 6-1, 7-5 to initially even the match score. UCLA fought back with wins on courts six and two. Freshman Jana Hossam tried to rally the troops as she defeated Ahmani Guichard in a three-set thriller 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 on court five. Hossam's point wouldn't do the trick, as freshman No. 41 ranked Kate Fakih beat Fairclough 7-6(5), 6-4 to solidify the win for the Bruins.
With the loss, USC drops to 13-6 and 7-4 in conference play. The Women of Troy now turn their attention to two final home matches this Friday and Saturday at Marks Stadium. On Friday, USC will host Rutgers for a 3 p.m. match and wrap up the regular season against Maryland on Saturday at 11 a.m.
