The Trojans dropped a 3-2 decision to the Golden Bears at the MPSF Midseason Rumble
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 3-ranked USC beach volleyball team (9-3) was defeated, 3-2, by No. 9 California (9-1) in the MPSF Midseason Rumble at Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium on Friday, March 7.

USC—in its sixth 3-2 result this spring—falls to 4-2 in such matches. The loss to the Golden Bears snaps an eight-dual win streak by the Trojans and drops the Women of Troy to 13-4 all-time against California. Each of USC's losses to the Bears have been narrow 3-2 results and all have been at neutral locations. The last time Cal defeated USC was also at the Stanford Beach Stadium in the 2023 Pac-12 Championship.

The Bears' three dual points were won off straight-set matches by the odd-numbered pairs. The Trojans won the even-numbered courts in three-set finishes and led, 2-0, before Cal stormed back for the win. The last time USC led, 2-0, and lost a dual was to a No. 2-ranked UCLA in the 2021 Pac-12 Championship (April 26).

USC went on top, 1-0, when junior Delaney Karl and graduate Ella Larkin completed a comeback win, 17-21, 21-19, 15-12, over Jenna Colligan and Christine DeRoos at the No. 4 position. The Trojans went in front, 2-0, with a win at the No. 2 position where freshman Kennedy Coakley and sophomore Ashley Patercollected a 20-22, 22-20, 15-13 win over Sierra Caffo and Gia Fisher to improve to 7-2 as a duo.

Cal had an answer when its No. 5 pair of Ella Dreibholz and Ella Sears took a 21-15, 21-11 win over sophomores Grace Hong and Jess Horwath. The Bears quickly tied the dual at two-all with a win at the No. 3 position when Marilu Pally and Alexandria Young-Gomez claimed a 21-16, 21-16 win against sophomore Madison Goellner and junior Mabyn Thomas.

The clinching point came from the top court when Emma Donley and Portia Sherman took down sophomore Zoey Henson and junior Madison White, 21-15, 21-18. In a non-scoring exhibition match, Maile Somera and Amelia Vugrincic defeated USC's pair of freshman Calla Tufto and sophomore Kaylee Young in straight sets, 21-18, 21-17.

The Women of Troy are back in action with a pair of duals on Saturday (March 8) and get started against Oregon at 10 a.m. PT and then conclude the weekend against No. 5 Stanford at 2 p.m. All duals at the MPSF Midseason Rumble will be streamed live on Big Ten Plus (B1G+) with individual court coverage available.
