The Trojans topped the Longhorns in a historic first meeting between the two programs

BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 4-ranked USC beach volleyball team (16-6) defeated No. 8 Texas (17-8) in a 3-0 decision to close the Death Volley Invitational at LSU Beach Volleyball Stadium on Saturday, March 29.

The Trojans won the historic first-ever meeting between the two programs to improve to 44-2 all-time in first-time duals with opponents. USC departs the Pelican State with a 4-3 mark—all matches played in Baton Rouge.

Due to inclement weather in the area, the schedule for the invitational was altered, which included the cancellation of USC's match with No. 2 TCU. All duals were played to decision—not completion.

At court two, freshman Kennedy Coakley and sophomore Ashley Pater struck first against the Longhorns and claimed a straight-set win, 21-16, 21-17, over Katie Hashman and Emma Grace Robertson to run their win streak to 12 matches and improve to 16-2 overall.

As the 28th individual pairing employed by the Trojans this season, graduate Maya Gessner and sophomore Madison Goellner teamed up at the No. 4 position to take down Macey Butler and Noa Sonneville, 24-22, 21-12, to give USC a 2-0 lead in the dual.

Moments later, the clinching point hit the board on a USC win from court five where freshman Calinda Kok and junior Mabyn Thomas secured a 22-20, 21-17 win over Ava Patton and Kylie Wickley.

With the dual decided, play was suspended at the top court and at the No. 3 position. At the ones, the Trojans' pair of sophomore Zoey Henson and junior Madison White had taken the first set over Chloe Charles and Eva Liisa Kuivonen, 21-19 and held a 15-11 lead in the second when play stopped. At court three, junior Delaney Karl and graduate Ella Larkin had forced set three after splitting sets with Maddison Parmelly and Karin Zolnercikova, 23-25, 21-15.

The Women of Troy return to Southern California for the remainder of the regular season and will open the month of April at the Best in the West tournament in Laguna Beach, Calif. USC takes on Stanford and Hawai'i at Main Beach on Friday (April 4) and then faces Washington and North Florida on Saturday (April 5). It will be the Trojans' first time playing an official contest on Laguna sand.
