USC improves to 3-0 in conference play.
LOS ANGELES – No. 16 USC women's tennis swept to victory in its Big Ten home opener on Saturday, cruising past the Michigan State Spartans 4-0 at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
Â
The Women of Troy started the match off with a bang, with the No. 5 ranked duo of senior Grace Piper and sophomore Lily Fairclough dominating doubles at center court with a 6-0 victory. The win marked the pair's seventh straight win together. On court two, freshman Jana Hossam and senior Sloane Morra followed with a 6-2 win to secure the doubles point and eighth straight victory as a pair. The Women of Troy have not dropped the doubles point at all this season, winning the early point 11 straight times.Â
Â
USC carried its momentum into singles play, wasting no time getting points on the board. No. 46 Piper was unstoppable on center court, storming to a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set victory to give USC its second point. Next, it was No. 82 Immi Haddad who brought the Women of Troy within one point of victory with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph on court four. Finally, Hossam clinched the match on court five with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win. Both No. 69 junior Emma Charney and graduate student Maia Sung were winning on their respective courts when play was suspended.
Â
With Saturday's win under their belt, the Women of Troy now turn their attention to Sunday's match against No. 5 Michigan. First serve will take place at 1 p.m. at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
