No. 1 USC Beach Volleyball Outlasts No. 12 Hawai’i to Open Season on 3-2 Win
February 20, 2025 | Women's Beach Volleyball
Freshman Kennedy Coakley and sophomore Ashley Pater delivered the clinching point in a thrilling three-set win over the Wahine
HONOLULU – No. 1-ranked USC beach volleyball (1-0) took down No. 12 Hawai'i (0-1) by a 3-2 count in the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic on Queen's Beach sand to open the 2025 season on Thursday, Feb. 20.
The win pushes the Women of Troy to 14-0 all-time in season openers and is six victories in a row over the Rainbow Wahine for USC, which improves to 18-3 against UH the head-to-head series. The Trojans also go to 28-4 all-time in the state of Hawai'i and have now won seven straight duals dating back to April 2024. USC also improves to 156-18 when ranked No. 1 in the AVCA poll.
The USC-UH matchup was the seventh dual to end in a 3-2 result between the Trojans and Wahine. In those, the Women of Troy now hold a 4-3 edge. Separately, it is the fourth time that USC has opened a season on a 3-2 win.
In the only match to go three sets, freshman Kennedy Coakley delivered the dual-clinching block as she and sophomore Ashley Pater finished off Alana Embry and Sydney Miller, 21-13, 19-21, 15-10, at the No. 3 position. The Trojans were down, 8-7, at the side switch but forced a UH timeout on back-to-back points and then closed out the win with an 8-2 burst.
USC scored the first two points of the dual, but Hawai'i answered back to make it two-all. At the No. 2 position, graduate Maya Gessner and sophomore Zoey Henson got things started with a 21-8, 21-19 win over Sydney Amiatu and Julia Lawrenz. The Trojans' No. 5 pair—junior Delaney Karl and sophomore Kaileigh Truslow—scored a second point on a 21-13, 21-12 win over Sophie Buschmann and Kristen Serrano.
The Wahine fired back with a win at the No. 4 position where Jesse Mann and Jasmine Wandeler took down USC's duo of sophomore Madison Goellner and graduate Ella Larkin, 21-18, 21-17. Hawai'i put extra pressure on court three when the Wahine's No. 1 pair of Sarah Burton and Caprice Lorenzo got a 21-19, 21-18 win over Trojan juniors Mabyn Thomas and Madison White.
When the dust had settled, no set lost by a USC pair was by more than four points. All five of the Trojans' pairings on opening day were brand new tandems and only Thomas and White were teammates in a previous season.
Up next, the Trojans take on seventh-ranked Loyola Marymount in a 4 p.m. HT (6 p.m. PT) dual on Queen's Beach. USC will then face No. 5 Stanford and No. 11 Arizona State on Friday (Feb. 21) and then meet No. 3 UCLA and No. 2 TCU on Saturday (Feb. 22).
