USC earns its first medal of the 2024 Paris Games; De Grasse advances to men’s 100m semis
Nicole Yeargin earned a bronze medal in the mixed 4x400m relay and TeeTee Terry placed fifth in the women's 100m final to highlight USC's efforts during the second day of track and field at the 2024 Paris Olympics held at Stade de France in Paris, France today (Aug. 3). Also, Andre De Grasse advanced to the men's 100m dash semifinals tomorrow.
Â
- Nicole Yeargin (USC, 2021) and the Great Britain mixed 4x400m relay team earned a bronze medal today with a new national-record time of 3:08.01. Yeargin did not compete in the final, but anchored Great Britain's team yesterday (which set the previous national record), earning her the bronze medal today, her first Olympic medal and the first by a Trojan in any sport at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
- TeeTee Terry (USC, 2021) of USA had a time of 10.97 (-0.1) to place fifth in the women's 100m dash final. Terry reached her first Olympic final by placing third in her women's 100m dash semifinal heat earlier in the day with a time of 11.07 (+0.2).Â
- Andre De Grasse (USC, 2015) of Canada ran 10.07 (+0.3) to place third in his 100m first-round heat to automatically advance to tomorrow's semifinals in the event. Chris Borzor (USC, 2023) of Haiti, who advanced to the first round by posting the top time of 10.26 (+0.2) in the preliminary rounds earlier in the day, had a time of 10.28 (+0.2) to place fifth in his first-round heat and did not advance. Aaron Brown (USC, 2014), who was in the same heat, was called for a false start and disqualified. He will be in action later at the Paris Olympics in the 200m.
- Lorea Ibarzabal (USC, 2017) of Spain had a time of 1:59.81 to place third in her women's 800m repechage heat and ended up with the sixth-fastest time overall. The winner of each of the four heats automatically advanced, plus the next two fastest times. Although she was sixth overall, two of the heat winners were able to advance with slower times and she was fourth-fastest of the runners looking to advance on time, so just missed out on advancing to the semifinals.
- Puerto Rico's Ayden Owens-Delerme (who competed at USC in 2019) placed ninth in the men's decathlon.Â
