The Trojans sent off their senior class with a pair of wins over top-10 opponents
LOS ANGELES – The No. 2-ranked USC beach volleyball team (29-4) took down No. 1-ranked crosstown rival UCLA (29-5) by a 4-1 count and then collected a 3-2 win over No. 9 Loyola Marymount (22-13) to close out the regular season on Senior Day at Merle Norman Stadium, Thursday, April 18.
The Women of Troy evened the season series with the Bruins at two wins apiece and improved to 25-19 all-time in 44 meetings. In what was USC's 31st No. 1 vs. No. 2 dual, the Trojans moved to 17-14 all-time and improved to 8-5 when ranked No. 2 entering the meeting. USC also improved to 30-0 in meetings with the Lions. In home matches, USC finished the home schedule with an 8-0 record and pushed its record win streak to 26 duals in a row to improve to 91-11 all-time on MNS sand.
At the top court, senior All-Americans Megan Kraft and Delaynie Maple went 2-0, both in straight sets, and provided the clinching point in each dual to advance to a 30-3 mark on the season; 58-6 all-time. Maple collected her 123rd-career victory and moved into sixth all-time in program history among individual all-time wins.
The Trojans' No. 3-pair of twin grads Audrey Nourse and Nicole Nourse also went 2-0 with a comeback three-set win over UCLA's duo of Kenzie Brower and Jessie Smith and a straight-set win over Cassie Chinn and Chloe Hooker of LMU. Nourse and Nourse improved to 25-7 on the season and go to 116-23 all-time.
At the No. 4 position, the Trojans' newest duo of freshman Ashley Pater and graduate Grace Seits maintained its unblemished record with a three-set win over UCLA's Tessa Van Winkle and Jaden Whitemarsh, 21-23, 22-20, 15-12, and then got a straight-set victory against Anna Pelloia and Jacinda Ramirez of LMU, 22-20, 21-15. Pater-Seits improved to 5-0 on the season.
USC's tandem of graduate Maddi Kriz and sophomore Madison White mounted a furious come back to get a 9-21, 22-20, 15-12 win over UCLA's Peri Brennan and Devon Newberry, but dropped a straight-set decision to LMU's Isabelle Reffel and Alisha Stevens. The Trojans employed two different pairs at the No. 5 position, but both were defeated.
In post-match ceremonies, the Women of Troy honored their graduate transfers Emily Fitzner, Maddi Kriz, Molly Phillips, Ainsley Radell, and Grace Seits; seniors Olivia Bakos, Megan Kraft, and Delaynie Maple; and fifth-year seniors/graduates Audrey Nourse and Nicole Nourse.
USC now awaits seeding in the upcoming Pac-12 Championship set to be played at the Sun Devil Beach Volleyball Facility in Tempe, Ariz., April 24-26.
