The Women of Troy fall to the Tigers, 3-2, but beat the Seminoles, 4-1
BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 1-ranked USC beach volleyball team (21-3) fell, 3-2, to 10th-ranked LSU (13-7) but bounced back to get a 5-1 win over fifth-ranked FSU (20-5) to conclude play in the Death Volley Invitational at Beach Volleyball Stadium on Saturday, March 30. The Trojans' loss to the host Tigers snapped a season-long 16-dual win streak.
The Women of Troy fell to 6-3 all-time against LSU and rose to 21-5 over the Seminoles and extended to an eight-dual win streak over FSU. In losses this season, two of USC's three finishes have been narrow 3-2 decisions. In its first trip to the Pelican State, USC moved to 3-1 all-time in the state of Louisiana. The Trojans are now to 147-17 in duals when ranked No. 1 in the AVCA coaches' poll.
At the top court, All-American seniors Megan Kraft and Delaynie Maple won their 18th straight match—a streak that ranks ninth among pairs all-time in program history—and improved to 23-1 on the season with victories over Gabi Bailey and Ellie Shank (19-21, 21-13, 15-9) of LSU and Alexis Durish and Anna Long (21-15, 21-10) of Florida State. The two wins push Kraft-Maple to 51-4 all-time as the duo becomes the eighth to reach 50 wins all-time at USC.
Graduates Maddi Kriz and Grace Seits took two losses at the two spot, which ended a 14-match win streak. The Trojan pair was defeated by Reilly Allred and Parker Bracken (21-18, 12-21, 15-13) of LSU and fell to Madelyne Anderson and Alli Hansen (21-18, 21-19) of FSU. Kriz and Seits fall to 17-3 overall as a pair. Twin graduates Audrey Nourse and Nicole Nourse split their matches at the No. 3 position, falling to Ella Larkin and Aubrey O'Gorman (21-19, 17-21, 19-17) of LSU in three sets, but earned a three-set win over Audrey Koenig and Raelyn White (21-17, 17-21, 25-23) of FSU. The twin Trojans ended the day 18-5 on the season and are now 109-21 all-time.
At the No. 4 position, freshman Ashley Pater and sophomore Madison White paired to go to 9-1 overall, with a loss to Amber Haynes and Skylar Martin (23-21, 18-21, 15-13) of LSU and a win over Kaeli Crews and McKenna Flaherty (21-15, 21-11) of Florida State.
At pair five, graduate Ainsley Radell and sophomore Mabyn Thomas paired for two wins. They toppled Kate Baker and Emily Meyer (21-11, 21-14) of LSU and Caitlin Moon and Kaileigh Truslow (21-19, 21-16) of FSU. In exhibition matches, senior Olivia Bakos teamed with graduate Molly Phillips for a win over the Tigers' Gracey Campbell and Amelia Taft (21-16, 21-15). Freshman Madison Goellner and sophomore Gabby Walker paired up for a win against Florida State's Arianna Bergner and Makenna Wolfe (21-19, 21-15).
The Women of Troy head to Seattle for the Pac-12 North Invitational next week (April 5-6). The first dual against 12th-ranked Arizona State is set for a 9 a.m. PT on Friday (April 5). USC will also play third-ranked Stanford (April 5) and conclude the trip with a Saturday-morning dual against California (April 6) at 9 a.m.
