USC Football Honors Past Trojan Eras on Homecoming
November 15, 2024 | Football
LOS ANGELES -- To celebrate USC's 2024 Homecoming, the Trojans will honor the past eras of the football program during the game versus Nebraska on Saturday (Nov. 16) at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
The USC football players will don a classic striped uniform that the Trojans wore between 1972-2001. Saturday's uniform iteration gives a nod to the jerseys that were worn by USC legends like Heisman winners Charles White (1979) and Marcus Allen (1981). In that time frame, the Trojans won 3 national championships (1972, 1974 and 1978).
The field will also be painted in a throwback style. The endzones will be marked with gold paint, cardinal lettering and a cardinal and white diamond pattern, as well as a gold interlock painted at the 50-yard line. This field paint combination was commonly seen in the late 90's and early 2000's.
Additionally, the USC players will honor the late John Robinson who passed away on Monday by wearing a special helmet sticker. Robinson guided the Trojans to the 1978 national championship and into 8 bowl games. He won 74.1% of his games while compiling a 104-35-4 record during 2 coaching stints spread over 12 years at Troy (1976-82 and 1993-97), recording more victories than any USC gridiron coach except John McKay and Howard Jones. He was 4-0 in the Rose Bowl and earned 5 Pac-10 titles.
Coincidentally, Robinson coached at USC during the same time when Saturday's retro uniforms were originally worn.
USC has a 67-28-4 record in its Homecoming games, dating back to the first such event in 1924 (not including 1 win vacated due to NCAA penalty; original record: 68-28-4).
