USC Women's Golf Ranked No. 2/No. 5 in the Golf Channel Preseason Poll/Mizuno WGCA Coaches Poll
September 01, 2023 | Women's Golf
Three Trojans made their way onto the Preseason Top 30 Players to Watch List for the 2023-24 Season; Amari Avery, Catherine Park and Bailey Shoemaker
LOS ANGELES -Â USC is tabbed as one of the teams to beat, as it earned the No. 2 spot on the Golf Channels' women's golf preseason top 30 teams list and the No. 5 spot in the Mizuno preseason Coaches Poll.Â
Â
Fresh off a NCAA runner-up finish, the Trojans have a stacked roster with seven players returning (four starters) and two Rolex All-Americans (Bailey Shoemaker & Frances Kim) being added to the squad. Overall, USC is primed for another successful campaign, as it followed being picked as the No. 4 team in the preseason rankings (Golf Channel) a year ago, with a championship berth. Led by junior Amari Avery, No. 13 ranked amateur (World Amateur Golf Rankings), and Catherine Park, No. 82 ranked amateur, the Trojans will be a tough squad to tackle during the 2023-24 season.Â
Â
Golf Channel Preseason Top 30 Players to Watch:
Â
As the Golf Channel No. 2 team, it makes sense that USC is well represented in the players-to-watch list, as three players earned their spots as preseason All-Americans. Avery (No. 4) is tabbed as a First Team honoree; sophomore Park (No. 19) sits with the Second Team and incoming freshman Bailey Shoemaker (No. 25) makes her debut on the Third Team.Â
Â
Avery comes into the season with four career tournament wins, which ranks fourth in program history, two off of Annie Park's record (6). The junior was a WGCA First Team All-American her freshman year, after she recorded three tournament victories, and was a WGCA Honorable Mention recipient in 2022-23. Park earned her spot on the WGCA Honorable Mention list as the NCAA Individual Runner-up at the 2022-23 National Championship. Shoemaker comes into the college landscape with high expectations, as she is Golfweek's No. 14-ranked girls junior. The incoming freshman has already rattled off several accomplishments, as she made the cut at the 2022 U.S. Women's Open and became the first junior to win the Florida Women's Amateur.Â
Â
The Trojans hope to utilize these three players and the rest of their group to overcome last season's finish, as they fell short in the National Championship. USC starts its season on Sept. 18 at the Leadership and Golf Invitational in Tacoma, Wash., at the Chambers Bay Golf Club.Â
