USC’s Mason Cobb Selected to 2023 Butkus Award Watch List
August 10, 2023 | Football
LOS ANGELES—USC inside linebacker Mason Cobb was selected to the 2023 Butkus Award Watch List today (Aug. 10). The Butkus Award is annually presented to the best linebacker in college football.
Cobb, who transferred to USC in the spring of 2023 from Oklahoma State, looks to immediately contribute at inside linebacker as a senior. He was named to the All-Big-12 Second Team as he led the Pokes in tackles and tackles for loss with 96 total tackles and 13.0 for losses as a junior linebacker in 2022. His tackles for loss marked the second-most in the Big-12.
USC has just one Butkus Award winner, Chris Claiborne in 1998.
The number of linebackers on the watch list, 51, is a nod to the storied "51" pro jersey worn by the award's namesake, Dick Butkus, who was named by NFL Films as the greatest defensive player in football history.
The winner of the Butkus Award will be announced in December.
