USC Beach Volleyball Topples TCU to Reach NCAA Championship Dual
May 06, 2023 | Women's Beach Volleyball
The Women of Troy will play in their sixth title dual on Sunday
GULF SHORES, Ala. – The third-seeded and No. 3-ranked USC beach volleyball team (31-5) racked up a 3-2 win over second-seeded No. 2-ranked TCU (37-3) in the NCAA Championship semifinals at Gulf Beach Place on Saturday, May 6. The win propels the Women of Troy into their fourth straight championship dual; the program's sixth all-time.Â
Â
USC will face top-seeded and No. 1-ranked UCLA (40-3) in the title dual set for 11 a.m. CT (9 a.m. PT) and be shown live on ESPN. The Trojans and Bruins will meet in the national championship dual for the third time. UCLA won in 2019 and USC won in 2021.
Â
The Trojans eliminated the Horned Frogs to improve to 6-1 all-time in meetings with TCU while avenging a loss to the Frogs earlier this spring. USC won its 12th straight NCAA match and goes to 26-4 all-time in NCAA tournament duals and to 33-8 in duals played on Gulf Shores sand. Trojan pairs are now 82-30 in individual matches at the championship.
Â
USC racked up the first point of the dual with a win at the No. 4 position where graduates Jenna Johnson and Ashlyn Rasnick-Pope defeated Maria Gonzalez and Ana Vergara, 21-19, 21-16.
Â
Just minutes later, the Horned Frogs went in front, 2-1, with wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions. At the top court, junior All-American Megan Kraft and Delaynie Maple dropped just their second match of the season in a 21-19, 21-19 result against Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno.  The loss snapped a 17-match win streak for Kraft-Maple, which ranks tied for ninth all-time in program history.Â
Â
On court two, Anhelina Khmil and Kate Privett put the Frogs on top with a 21-13, 21-19 win over graduate Madison Shields and freshman Madison White.
Â
The Trojans evened the dual on a win from court three. There, twin seniors Audrey Nourse and Nicole Nourse claimed a 21-15 win in the first set, and then went the distance for a 29-27 win in the second frame over Hailey Hamlett and Sutton MacTavish. The win pushed the twin duo's record to 28-6 on the season and to 90-16 all-time; just one victory from tying the second-highest mark in program history.
Â
With the dual tied, all eyes turned to action at court five. There, junior Olivia Bakos and freshman Gabby Walker dropped a tight first set to Hailey Brockett and Rochelle Scott, 23-21, but fought back to win the second, 21-16. The third was tied at each point until Bakos-Walker broke away for a 10-7 lead. The Trojan duo kept its distance and finished off a 15-12 win to seal the dual.Â
