USC's Nikolaos Polychroniou Places Second In Men’s Hammer Throw At Pac-12 Track & Field Championships

USC also advances nine athletes to finals Sunday and Allie Jones is in second place in the heptathlon
Nikolaos Polychroniou placed second in the men's hammer throw, Allie Jones sits second in the women's heptathlon, Maci Simmons qualified for the women's 400m hurdles final and eight Trojan athletes advanced to the men's and women's 200m finals during the first day of the Pac-12 Track & Field Championships held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calf. today (May 12).
- Nikolaos Polychroniou took second in the men's hammer throw with a best mark of 233-0 (71.02m). He earned the USC men's team its first eight points in the team competition.
- Allie Jones finished the first day of the women's heptathlon with 3740 points, in second place, 38 points behind the leader. She is also just 39 points off her pace when she set the USC heptathlon record with 6217 points at the Mt. SAC Relays here in April.
- In the first event of the heptathlon, Jones let everyone know that she was going to be hard to dethrone as conference champion in the event, as she won the 100m hurdles with a PR of 12.81 (+1.9) to 1153 points. He time moved her to seventh place on USC's all-time list and ranks sixth among all 2023 NCAA hurdlers entering this week's action. Jones led the heptathlon by 67 points after one event.
- It was down to five other athletes in the high jump when Jones entered the competition at 5-4.25 (1.63m) and she cleared that height in her first attempt. The next height was a little more nerve-wracking as the other five jumpers cleared on the first attempt and she missed her first two attempts at 5-5.25 (1.66m), before clearing on her final attempt. She then cleared 5-6.50 (1.69m) and 5-7.75 (1.72m), before going out at 5-8.75 (1.75m), which would have been a PR. She finished third in the event with a clearance of 5-7.75 to earn 879 points. After two events, Jones had 2032 points and maintaining her 67-point lead in the heptathlon.
- Jones then had a best shot put of 39-5.25 (12.02m) to finish fifth in the heptathlon shot put. She earned 662 points in the event for a three-event total of 2694 points, good for second place, 97 points behind Ida Eikeng of Washington, who won the shot put with a mark of 47-2.50.
- Jones closed the day by winning the heptathlon 200m dash with a windy-PR of 23.33 (+2.2w). She earned 1046 points in the event and finished the day with 3740 points, good for second overall, trailing Eikeng by 38 points.
- USC was able to advance three men's runners to the 200m final on Sunday. Ashton Allen led the way by winning his preliminary rounds heat with a time of 20.86 (+2.2w), to advance with the fourth-fastest time. Matthew Okonkwo was second in his heat and seventh overall with a time of 20.96 (+1.5) to advance. Bryce Brock finished third in his heat and finished ninth, the final qualifying spot, with a time of 21.08 (+1.5) with a strong close.
- The USC women's team qualified five runners for the women's 200m final on Sunday, led by Caisja Chandler who had the top qualifying time of 22.69 (+3.4w). Samirah Moody also won her heat with a time of 22.98 (+1.3) to automatically advance to the final. She had the fourth-fastest qualifying time. USC next three runners qualified on time for the finals with Jan'Taijah Jones posting a PR of 22.99 (+1.5) to qualify fifth, Christine M. Mallard had a time of 23.14 (+2.4w) to qualify sixth and Jassani Carter had a time of 23.26 (+3.4w) to qualify seventh.
- Maci Simmons had a time of 59.91 to place fourth in her preliminary road heat and advanced to the Sunday final ninth, the final qualifying spot.
