Polychroniou moves into USC’s hammer throw top 10, Freeman wins women’s discus throw
The first day of the Ron & Sharlene Allice Trojan Invitational featured Nikolaos Polychroniou attacking USC's all-time top 10 list in the hammer throw, Karlee Freeman winning the women's discus throw competition and a festive dedication ceremony of the Colich Throws Center in Wilmington, Calif. today (April 7). Also, recently graduated women's hammer thrower Joy McArthur set the Japanese national record.
Before the throwing competitions began there was a dedication ceremony for the Colich Throw Center, followed by a luncheon. Among the dignitaries speaking were Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino, Los Angeles City Councilman (District 15) Tim McOsker, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Los Angeles Harbor Mike Lansing, USC Director of Athletics Mike Bohn and Olympians Conor McCullough (USC), Mac Wilkins (4-time Olympian, a gold medalist and 4-time world record-holder in the discus throw), Martin Maric (2-time Olympian and USC's new throws coach) and Molly Schaus (member of the LA28 Olympic Organizing Committee, 2-time Olympic medalist in hockey).

- The sophomore Polychroniou won with an amazing series, surpassing his previous personal best with five of his six throws to finish second, tops among the collegians. His opening throw of 224-10 (68.54m) surpassed his previous 16-pound hammer best of 224-7. He would then better that mark three more times, with a PR of 234-2 (71.37m) in the fourth round. That throw moved him into eighth place on USC's all-time hammer throw list. He also threw over 70 meters on his final two throws (71.13m and 70.23m). The redshirt junior Johnson also surpassed his previous personal best with each of his final three throw to finish sixth overall. In the fourth round he had a mark of 221-8 (67.57m), then 218-10 (66.72m) in the fifth round and finally finishing with a mark of 226-5 (69.01m) in the final round. That throw moved him to 11th on USC's all-time hammer throw list, just behind Trey Henderson who is 10th with a mark of 227-10 (69.45m). Freshman Matteo Mitchell also bettered his previous career best twice, with a best mark of 183-4 (55.89m). Mitchell placed seventh overall.
- The graduate student Freeman won the women's discus throw with a season-best mark of 175-1 (53.38m). Junior Summer Mosley placed second with a season-best mark of 158-11 (48.45m).
- In the women's hammer throw competition, McArthur set the women's hammer throw record for Japan with a mark of 229-3 (69.89) on her second throw. It was originally listed as 229-10 (70.06), but after certification it was dropped down to 229-3. The previous Japanese women's hammer throw record was 222-4 (67.77m) set by Yuka Murofushi on Aug. 1, 2004. McArthur graduated from USC in 2022 and sits fifth on USC's all-time list with a mark of 218-6 (66.61). McArthur won the event and Freeman placed second with best mark of 175-10 (53.60).Â
- USC did not have any athletes entered in the men's discus throw competition which was won by Connor Bell of New Zealand with a throw of 215-9 (65.78m).
