USC Beach Volleyball Adds Graduate Transfer Molly Phillips for 2024 Season
December 20, 2023 | Women's Beach Volleyball
The three-time defending NCAA champion Trojans add a two-time indoor NCAA champion to the roster
LOS ANGELES – The six-time national champion USC beach volleyball team has added graduate transfer Molly Phillips (Mansfield, Texas/Mansfield HS) from the University of Texas, head coach Dain Blanton announced on Wednesday, Dec. 20.
Â
"Molly is a two-time NCAA indoor volleyball champion and a proven winner," said Blanton. "We're extremely excited to welcome her to the Trojan Family and to assist her reaching all of her goals and potential on the sand. She was a dominant attacker and blocker for the Longhorns and our staff feels that her skills translate strongly to the beach game. It will be a whirlwind for her—coming off a long indoor volleyball season—but Molly is a savvy and resilient student-athlete with lots of experience navigating academics and athletics, so we expect her to hit the sand running when she arrives in Los Angeles."
Â
Phillips won back-to-back NCAA championships as an opposite hitter and middle blocker at Texas. She also helped the Longhorns win five of seven consecutive Big XII conference titles (2019-23). In 2022, Phillips earned AVCA All-America honorable mention and was a fourth-team All-American as chosen by Volleyball Magazine. She is a two-time AVCA All-Southwest Region Team member and was named to the All-Big-12 team three times. In five seasons, Phillips played in 145 matches and appeared in 475 sets. She totaled 773 career kills (1.63 kps) with .341 hitting and finished with 387 blocks (0.80 bps), 976.5 points (2.06 pps), and 146 digs.
Â
Under fifth-year head coach Dain Blanton, the USC beach volleyball team captured its third straight NCAA Championship (fifth NCAA title and sixth national title) in 2023. The Women of Troy finished the year ranked No. 1 and had an overall record of 32-5. USC added two more AVCA All-Americans to its history books with the third selection for Megan Kraft and the first-career honor for Delaynie Maple. Kraft was named the Pac-12's Player of the Year while she and Maple earned Pac-12 Pair of the Year laurels. Both were named to the Pac-12 All-Conference Team and were joined by Madison Shields and Madison White. Blanton finished his fourth season with a 105-15 career record and Gustavo Rocha was chosen as the AVCA National Assistant Coach of the Year.Â
