A special event was held on June 23 at Heritage Hall to honor the journey of the Women of Troy.
USC Athletics hosted a multi-faceted celebration of the 50th anniversary of the enactment of Title IX on Thursday (June 23) at Heritage Hall. USC student-athletes, coaches, staff, alumni and other guests were in attendance for the event, which featured a photo exhibit, a mini-documentary of USC's Title IX journey and a panel of notable individuals discussing the groundbreaking legislation that forever changed the collegiate landscape for women.
Spearheaded by Dr. Julie Rousseau, USC's associate athletic director for diversity, equity and inclusion, and Joyce Bell Limbrick, USC's executive senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator, the event received additional support from USC President Carol L. Folt along with the Office of Equity, Equal Opportunity and Title IX. Sponsorship support was provided by USC Alumni Association, Merle Norman, and Nothing Bundt Cakes.
"It was an absolutely amazing event," Dr. Rousseau said. "I think to have a celebration of Title IX like this reminds us of where we've been and how much we've had to overcome. And it shows that we've made some advancements; we've progressed. But it also says to us, 'But that's not enough. We want more.' This legislation allows us to seek after more — to get closer and closer to getting equal to our male counterparts. So I think that this is a special day where we're able to say, 'Okay, let's go after more, and get people to rally around us.' And now we got to do the work."
The panel included USC's first female senior administrator, Barbara Hedges, as well as Olympian Janet Evans, USC Athletic Director Mike Bohn, USC women's basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb and women's tennis All-American Eryn Cayetano.Â
The mini-documentary, produced by USC's athletic video department, features many prominent Trojan voices, including Hedges and President Folt along with Trojan greats and former NCAA champions Barbara Hallquist, Lizette Salas and Rhonda Windham, among others.
"I think everybody was educated," Dr. Rousseau added. "We all know that knowledge is power. It truly is. And I think now that people know not only our history, but what we can do with this legislation, which empowers us to really say, 'I want more. I'm going to go after more.' Because more is required."
The documentary and panel session replay are available for viewing at usctrojans.com/titleix.
The June 23 celebration marked the culmination of a six-month campaign in which USC Athletics has highlighted different aspects of USC women's progress and successes following Title IX.Â
