USC Women’s Track & Field Wraps Up Regional; Five More Individuals, Both Relays Advance To NCAA Championships

The Trojan women will have eight opportunities to score at the NCAA Championships
Five more individuals and both relay teams qualified for the NCAA Championships during the final day of the women's 2022 NCAA West Preliminary Rounds being held at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Ark. today (May 28). The top 12 finishers in every event today earned a trip to the NCAA Championships to be held in Eugene, Ore. from June 8-11.
Trojans today joining Joy McArthur (HT) who qualified on Thursday to give USC six individual qualifiers for the NCAA Championships were Celera Barnes (100m), Jan'Taijah Ford (400m), Jasmine Jones (100m H), Bailey Lear (400m) and Jalaysiya Smith. USC also had its 4x100m and 4x400m relays qualify for nationals.

- USC's women's 4x100m relay team of Jones, Barnes, Chioma Okonkwo and Ford was the first qualifiers for the NCAA Championships today as it won the first heat with a time of 43.63 to automatically advance. That time ended up third overall among the qualifiers.
- Jones and Smith went 1-2 in the second heat of the women's 100m hurdles with winded-aided season bests to advance to nationals. Jones had a time of 12.82 (+2.8w) and Smith a wind-aided PR of 12.91 (+2.8w) to have the fourth and ninth-fastest times among the qualifiers. Smith had the fastest qualifying time among the freshmen. All 12 women advancing ran a sub-13.0 time.
- Celera Barnes won her women's 100m dash heat with a wind-aided time of 10.89 (+2.7w) to automatically advance to the NCAA Championships. Samirah Moody had a time of 11.21 (+2.7w) to finish fifth in the same heat and 17th overall. Moody had the third-fastest time in the 100m dash among the freshmen in the quarterfinals.
- Ford took second in her 400m quarterfinal heat with a time of 51.87 to qualify automatically to the NCAA semifinals in Oregon. Lear was fourth in the first heat with a time of 52.07, but after the three heats were completed, she had the top non-automatic qualifying time and earned herself a trip to nationals. Ford was sixth and Lear ninth overall among the qualifiers. Lear was a 400m All-American in 2021, placing seventh in the event at the NCAA Championships.
- Okonkwo had a PR of 23.45 (+2.0) in the women's 200m quarterfinal and finished 21st overall.
- The women's 4x400m relay of Lear, Kimberly Harris, Jones and Ford closed out the meet and punched their ticket to the NCAA Championships with a season-best time of 3:30.03 to take second in its heat and finish fifth overall.
