USC's Andrew Vorhees and Tuli Tuipulotu Win Morris Trophy
December 20, 2022 | Football
LOS ANGELES--USC OL Andrew Vorhees and DL Tuli Tuipulotu are the 2022 recipients of the Morris Trophy.Â
Â
The Morris Trophy is given to the most outstanding offensive and defensive lineman in the Pac-12 Conference and is voted on by the players.Â
Vorhees and Tuipulotu join a group of former Trojans to earn this same honor:Â Roy Foster (1980 & 1981), George Achica (1982), Bruce Mathews (1982), Jeff Bregel (1985), Tony Boselli (1994), Darrell Russell (1996), Travis Claridge (1999), Jacob Rogers (2003), Ryan Kalil (2006), Sedrick Ellis (2006 & 2007), Charles Brown (2009), Tyron Smith (2010), Matt Kalil (2011) and Alijah Vera-Tucker (2020).Â
Vorhees was named to the AP and PFF All-America First Teams. His pass blocking was a crucial piece of Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams' outstanding performance this season to allow him to go 296-for-448 (.661) for 4,075 yards and 37 TDs. His run blocking allowed 3 different Trojans to score rushing touchdowns. His run blocking allowed 5 different Trojans to score a total of 29 rushing TDs this season. Per PFF, Vorhees is the No. 4 graded guard in the nation with over 700 snaps.
Tuipulotu is unanimous First Team All-American.  Players become unanimous All-Americans by earning first team from all five officially recognized teams: FWAA, Walter Camp, AFCA, AP and Sporting News. USC now has 29 total unanimous All-Americans. The last Trojan to be a unanimous All-American was Marqise Lee in 2012.
Tuipulotu, the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, is the nation's third-leading sack man with 12.5 on the season (0.96 per game). He is also the Pac-12 leader and is sixth nationally with 1.6 tackles for loss per game (21.0 total).
Tuipulotu's 12.5 sacks are the most in a single season at USC since Kenechi Udeze set the Trojans' record with 16.5 in 2003. Tuipulotu has recorded 44 tackles, 29 of them solo. He has tallied three pass breakups at the line, two quarterback hurries – one of which turned into an intentional grounding penalty for a safety against Colorado – and has collected forced two fumbles.
Â
He is the 2022 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year and is a finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award. Tuipulotu was a finalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Rotary Lombardi Award, the Lott IMPACT Trophy and the Nagurski Trophy. He was also named to a variety of other All-American First Teams including CBS Sports, The Athletic and Phil Steele.
Winners of the Morris Trophy are selected by receiving the highest number of votes from opposing players. The process begins with each Pac-12 Head Football Coach submitting the names of the top two offensive and defensive linemen on their team to the Morris Trophy office. A ballot is then created and distributed to opposing players in the conference. A maximum of 8 defensive linemen and 10 offensive linemen from each team vote for the best player each has played against during the current season. Votes are compiled after the Pac-12 season and winners are announced in mid-December.
