USC Partners With WHOOP to Maximize Student-Athlete Performance

LOS ANGELES — When athletic director Mike Bohn arrived in Los Angeles, he made it his mission to make USC the most student-athlete centered athletic department in the nation. USC Athletics recently took another step in that direction by partnering with WHOOP, the human performance company.
USC became the first school in the Pac-12 and one of only five schools in the nation to offer wearable WHOOP straps to such a large group of its student-athletes. The WHOOP strap collects biometric data on strain, sleep and recovery and helps student-athletes understand their bodies and implement strategies to improve their performance.
"Student-athletes are challenged with a variety of physiological and mental stressors on campus as they balance an increased academic workload and athletic strain," said Kristen Holmes, WHOOP's VP of Sports Performance. "WHOOP is the perfect tool for student-athletes to deepen their understanding of their bodies — especially when it comes to sleep and recovery — while promoting general wellness so they can be at the top of their game in and out of the classroom."
Approximately 150 USC student-athletes are currently using WHOOP straps and seeing positive behavioral changes. WHOOP straps have been proven to increase sleep quantity and quality, minimize the adverse effects of travel, increase exercise intensity and duration, improve cardiovascular health and decrease stress levels.
"WHOOP has a very special technology to offer," said Russ Romano, USC Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Medicine. "It's a really positive experience for a student-athlete who's serious about their health, well-being and performance."
Each student-athlete's body is different, and the private data they receive from WHOOP allows each Trojan to make personalized decisions to maximize their success in all aspects of life. Trojans also have the option of opting into team insights with their teammates and coaches to achieve greater goals.
"The best athletes in the world wear WHOOP to take control of their health and achieve their goals, and top organizations ranging from the PGA TOUR and LPGA Tour to CrossFit and the NFLPA trust WHOOP to take their leagues to the next level of performance," said Holmes. "USC has a rich history of success and we are excited to support the school's student-athletes in their endeavors to unlock their full potential."
