USC Beach Receives USMC/AVCA Team Academic Honor

The Women of Troy were among 41 collegiate beach squads honored by the AVCA for academic achievement
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The USC beach volleyball team was named one of 41 collegiate beach programs to receive the United State Marine Corps (USMC) and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award on Monday, July 20.
A record-breaking 1,315 teams earned the Team Academic Award for the 2019-20 season, which includes both men's and women's teams among all divisions, junior colleges, and high schools. The previous year's record was exceeded by almost 200 teams. 232 programs received Team Academic honors for the first time in 2020.
"Coaches have the most influence during difficult times," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "Keeping student-athletes focused on their academic success when their volleyball identity was suddenly gone is leadership worth celebrating!"
The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.
In terms of USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award winners by subgroup, girls high school led the way with 461 recipients. In all three NCAA Women's Divisions, over 50 percent of the membership won the award, led by 68 percent in DI, 57 percent in DII, and 53 percent in DIII. In the emerging sport of beach volleyball, 49 percent of teams won the award and in the fastest growing sector of Collegiate Men, 38 schools were honored, doubling the number from the previous year.
The Women of Troy went 6-5 in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Each of USC's losses were by narrow 3-2 decisions under Dain Blanton in his first year with the Trojans. A three-time national champion, USC finished as the NCAA runner-up in 2019 and claimed the program's third Pac-12 Championship with a dramatic 3-2 win over crosstown rival UCLA. 11 different Women of Troy have earned the program's 20 AVCA All-America certificates including returning junior Sammy Slater (2019).
