March 25, 2020 | Men's Swimming & Diving, Features
The No. 21 USC men's swimming and diving team, ended their season in an unusual fashion after the NCAA made the decision to cancel all winter and spring championships amid coronavirus concerns.
The Trojans were set to compete at the 2020 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis, IN., starting today March 25 through Sat., March 28. USC had four athletes qualified including a pair of sophomore swimmers and two divers.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS NOTES
USC's nine NCAA team titles (1960, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977) are fourth most nationally and Troy has won a combined 121 NCAA event titles (also fourth most), including 98 individually and 23 on relays ... USC won its last team title in 1977 and posted its last top 3 finish in 1990 with a second place. Since 1990, the best USC has done is a quartet of fourth-place finishes in 1991, 2001, 2013 and 2015. The Trojans have won at least one NCAA title in 10 of the past 19 seasons.
TROJANS AT THE NCAAs
Sophomores Victor Johansson was primed to score at NCAAs this year, with the 11th fastest seed in the 1650y free (14:47.27). Last year Johansson finished 14th overall in the race, contributing to the Trojans team total of 81 points.
Sophomore Alexei Sancov looked to compete at his first NCAAs this season, seeded 14th in the 200y free (1:32.95).
DIVING
USC had two divers set to attend the 2020 NCAA Men's Diving Championships including senior Henry Fusaro and freshman George Korovin.
Senior Fusaro, a year after missing the postseason due to injury, earned a return NCAA trip on 1-meter and 3-meter. After winning the 1-meter competition (777.50) and finishing third on 3-meter (790.15) at the 2020 Zone E Championships in Federal Way, Wash., Fusaro had locked in his third NCAA trip. He was looking to score individually for the first time since doing so on both springboards as a 2017 freshman.
Freshman Korovin, qualified for his first NCAA Diving Championships on all three boards while competing at the 2020 Zone E Championships. The freshman standout finished second on platform (714.90), seventh on 3-meter (707.80) and 10th on 1-meter (580.65).
THIS SEASON
With a relatively young squad including 12 freshmen, the Trojans struggled to score points in dual meets this season, finishing the year 0-6 in dual action.
Sophomore Alexei Sancov was a regular contributor for the Trojans this season. He was named Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month in November after breaking a pair of USC records in the Art Adamson Invitational at Texas A&M. He shattered the school mark in the 200y fly in 1:42.20 while also lowering the Trojan standard in the 200y IM in 1:43.92.

During the mid-season point, Sancov's top time in the 200y free (1:32.95) was fourth nationally, his 1:42.20 in the 200y fly was seventh and his 1:43.92 in the 200y IM was 10th.
Sophomore Victor Johansson was also strong. His 14:47.27 in the 1650y free ranked seventh nationally heading into Conference Championships.
Junior Nikola Miljenic helped the Trojans secure points at the 2020 Pac-12 Swimming Championships, posting a 19.48 in the 50y free A final to finish fifth overall. Miljenic also touched sixth in the A final of the 100y fly (46.16) and was first in the consolation final of the 100y free (43.09).
Senior diver Henry Fusaro, who missed the postseason last season after suffering an injury in the spring semester, returned to top form again. He posted wins on the 1- and 3-meter at both the Trojan and Utah Diving Invitationals and was second on both boards at the Bruin Invite. He swept the springboards against Arizona and was second on both against Arizona State.
He was named Pac-12 Men's Diver of the Week (Feb. 12) after winning three times during the Trojans' dual meets against California and Stanford (Feb. 7-8). Fusaro also went on to win Pac-12 Swim/Dive Scholar Athlete of the Year at the 2020 Pac-12 Diving Championships.
