Abdulghany, Corpuz, Ruffels Set To Start Arnold Palmer Cup
December 20, 2020 | Women's Golf
Trojan trio will play Monday through Wednesday in Orlando.
Seniors Gabriela Ruffels and Allisen Corpuz, fresh off playing in the 2020 U.S. Women's Open, will join fellow senior Alyaa Abdulghany in the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup, Dec. 21-23, at Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando, Florida.
The Ryder Cup-style competition features the top men's and women's collegiate golfers matching the United States against a team of International players. Ruffels (Australia) and Abdulghany (Malyasia) will represent Team International while Corpuz will play for Team USA.
Ruffels also played in the 2019 Arnold Palmer Cup with junior teammate Malia Nam and former teammate and 2020 LPGA rookie Jennifer Chang.
Originally scheduled to be played July 3-5 at Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland, the event was moved to December to the Bay Hill Club & Lodge. The inaugural Arnold Palmer Cup was staged there in 1997 and Bay Hill will be the first venue to host the matches twice.
Ruffels is coming off a tie for 13th at the 2020 U.S Open at 5-over 289 (71-72-76-70), her finish the best USC result at the U.S. Open since Nicole Castrale tied for ninth in 2012 and the best Trojan amateur result since Jennifer Song also tied for 13th in 2009. Her 2020 has also included a runner-up finish at the 2020 U.S. Women's Amateur and a tie for 15th at the ANA Inspiration.
Abdulghany, coming off of a career-best scoring average of 72.17 as a junior, made it to the semifinals of the 2020 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship and also won the Australian Master of the Amateurs Championship this year.
Corpuz, who played in her third U.S. Open, owns the 12th-best career scoring average at USC (72.96) while her junior season average (71.57) was fifth best. The Honolulu, Hawaii, native was named a 2020 WGCA first team All-American after finishing the year with a career best four top seven finishes and five in the top 11 in the shortened season.
