The Trojans held an up-tempo practice in shells on Thursday as they completed their on-field prep for Saturday's Fall Football Showcase.
- A few Trojans were held out with injuries: DE Drake Jackson (eye infection), CB Max Williams (hamstring), LB Hunter Echols (turf toe), LB Eli'jah Winston (turf toe), WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (groin/hip tightness), DE Jacob Lichtenstein (calf).
- Safety Talanoa Hufanga continued his impressive string of practices by scoring on a 50+ yard pick-six (his third INT this week). "I'm glad he's on our football team," USC head coach Clay Helton said of the sophomore, who's primed for a big season after breaking his collarbone in 2018. "He's so football instinctive."
- Helton noted that Hufanga was "as good an offensive player as he was a defensive player" back in high school, which helps him read routes and understand spacing.
- Hufanga's pick-six came off of JT Daniels, and Helton said it was the QB's only poor decision of the day. "He's been really consistent through 12 practices," Helton said of the sophomore signal caller. "He's been a stabilizing force each and every practice."
- Helton turned up the tempo at today's practice to prepare the players for the speed of a real game. "I said to the guys, 'This is reality. This is college football. This is how fast it's played. This is how good of condition you have to be in when you play up-tempo,'" Helton explained.
- The Trojans are back in action at the Fall Football Showcase on Saturday, Aug. 17. Visit usctrojans.com/showcase for tickets and details!
