Behind a 5-under performance from sophomore Jennifer Chang and a 2-under from freshman Malia Nam, the No. 1 USC women's golf team fortified its lead during the second round of the NCAA Cle Elum (Wash.) Regional at the Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort on Tuesday (May 7).

The Pac-12 champion Trojans, six-time winners this season, were the only school under par today in Washington and finished their day at a combined 10-under 566 (281-285) through 36 holes. Host Washington is second at 2-over 578 while San Jose State is third at 6-over 582. Arkansas is fourth (7-over 583) with Northwestern fifth (10-over 586) while Ohio State and UCF are tied for the sixth and final qualifying spot (12-over 588). Four teams are within six strokes of the tie for sixth.

The top six teams in each of the NCAAs four regionals will advance to the national championships May 17-22 at The Blessings G.C. in Fayetteville, Ark. USC is looking to advance out of NCAA Regional play for the 22nd year in a row in its 28th consecutive NCAA appearance.

Chang's blistering 67 today propelled her into first at 7-under 137 (70-67), a stroke ahead of Washington's Rino Sasaki and UCF's Ana Laura Collado. Four others are within four strokes.

It was Chang's sixth round in the 60s this year, tied for most on the team with Nam. She eagled the par 5 8th hole en route to a 2-under front 9 and birdied 14, 15 and 18 to complete her second-best round of the season.

Chang will start tomorrow eyeing her potential second win this season and third win of her career. She is also riding a streak of three straight top 6 finishes.

Nam is tied for ninth at 1-under 143 (73-70). She had six birdies on the day, including three during a 1-under front 9. She fell back to 1-over after a bogey on 13, but closed with birdies on 15, 16 and 18 for the 70.

Sophomore Alyaa Abdulghany is in eighth at 2-under 142 (70-72) after a par second round. She mixed five birdies against five bogeys, even on both nines today as she looks for her fifth straight top 13 finish.

Sophomore Gabriela Ruffels is tied for 13th at 1-over 145 (69-76). She got off to a slow start Tuesday but righted herself with an even back 9. Junior Allisen Corpuz rounded out USC's play and is tied for 40th at 6-over 150 (72-78) in the 96-woman field.

The Trojans have won an NCAA-best 12 regional titles entering this season. If they hold on Wednesday, it will be their first since sharing a crown in 2016 and their first out-right since 2015.
