May 01, 2019 | Men's Golf, Features
Three-round event set for May 13-15 at University of Texas G.C.
The No. 5 USC men's golf team, a three-time winner this season among six top 2 finishes, begins anew its quest for the program's first national title as the No. 2 seed of the NCAA's Austin Regional, one of six NCAA Regionals that will be conducted May 13-15.
Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
The six regional sites include Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Washington, hosted by Washington State University; Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, California, hosted by Stanford University; TPC Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, hosted by Coastal Carolina University and Myrtle Beach Regional Sports Alliance; University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky, hosted by the University of Louisville; University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Georgia, hosted by the University of Georgia; and University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas, hosted by the University of Texas.
USC, a regional top seed in 2016 and 2017 and a No. 4 in 2018, has won three NCAA Regional titles under 13th-year head coach Chris Zambri, including in 2017, 2012 and 2008. The Trojans' streak of 11 straight trips to the NCAA final field ended in 2018 when USC failed to advance out of the Stockton Regional.
"We're happy to be headed to Austin," Zambri said. "We competed in an event there about 10 years ago and it's a good course. The competition at regionals gets deeper every year and we will be ready for a challenging week."
Joining the Trojans in Austin at the University of Texas Golf Club, in addition to top-seeded and host Texas, will be No. 3 Pepperdine, No. 4 Clemson, No. 5 TCU, No. 6 Arkansas, No. 7 Iowa, No. 8 Marquette, No. 9 San Jose State, No. 10 Saint Mary's, No. 11 Sam Houston State, No. 12 Missouri-Kansas City, No. 13 Prairie View A&M and No. 14 Army.
The Pac-12 qualified eight teams for the championships from USC, UCLA, California, Stanford, Oregon, Oregon State, Arizona and Arizona State as well as well as individuals from Colorado and Utah.
