USC Earns No. 1 Seed In NCAA Women's Beach Volleyball Tournament

The USC beach volleyball team (28-4), seeking its fourth national championship, received the No. 1 seed in the eight-team 2019 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship announced on Sunday, April 28.
The Women of Troy were chosen as one of the three selections out of the West and will face eighth-seeded Stetson (29-8) in a first-round dual at 9 a.m. CT this Friday, May 3, in Gulf Shores, Ala. The USC-Stetson dual will be shown live on ESPNU with individual court coverage on ESPN3.
Joining the Trojans and Hatters in the NCAA Tournament field are:
--No. 2 seed UCLA (31-3), who will open play against No. 7 seed Hawaii (26-9);
--No. 3 seed Florida State (28-5), who will face No. 6 seed Cal Poly (25-10) in first round action;
--and No. 4 seed Pepperdine (20-9), who will meet No. 5 seed LSU (29-6) in an opening round dual.
The NCAA Tournament is a double elimination format until the championship match. After the four opening round matches on Friday morning, the loser's will play elimination matches in the afternoon followed by late afternoon matches between the opening round winners. Play continues on Saturday (May 4) with a winner's bracket final and three elimination matches. On Sunday (May 5), there will be a 9:30 a.m. CT contender's bracket final followed by the championship match at 1 p.m. CT.
All eight of Friday's duals will be carried on ESPNU. Saturday matches will be shown on ESPN2. Sunday's contender's bracket dual will also air on ESPN2 before the title match at ESPN.
USC and Stetson have met six times in history, with the Women of Troy capturing all the meetings, including in NCAA play in 2014 and 2015 and a home victory in early March this season.
The Women of Troy are coming off a Pac-12 Tournament championship in which they defeated No. 1-ranked UCLA on Saturday (April 27) in the final. Stetson won its third-straight Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament championship two weeks ago.
USC owns three national championships in collegiate beach volleyball, including the final title awarded by the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) in 2015 and each of the first two NCAA championships (2016-17). The Trojans are 17-6 all-time on Gulf Shores sand and had a 12-0 run during their three championship seasons. UCLA is the defending champion. Pepperdine owns two national titles (2012 and 2014 AVCA) and Long Beach State claimed the only other championship in 2013.
