Marshall, Tell, Smith Chosen On Third Day Of NFL Draft
April 27, 2019 | Football, Features
Three more Trojans—cornerback Iman Marshall, safety Marvell Tell III and inside linebacker Cameron Smith—were selected in the 2019 NFL Draft on Saturday (April 27).
Marshall was picked in the fourth round (127th overall pick) by the Baltimore Ravens, Tell went in the fifth round to the Indianapolis Colts (144th overall pick) and Smith was a fifth rounder by the Minnesota Vikings (162nd overall pick).
They join offensive tackle Chuma Edoga, who was a third round pick of the New York Jets on Friday (April 26), to bring USC's all-time number of NFL draftees to 509, the most of any school. It is the fifth consecutive year that USC has had at least 4 players drafted and the 15th time in the past 17 drafts.
Marshall was the third Trojan cornerback drafted in the past 4 years, joining Kevon Seymour (2016) and Adoree' Jackson (2017). He is only the second USC player ever drafted by the Ravens, along with Javorius Allen (2015).
Marshall, who was USC's first 4-year starting cornerback since Daylon McCutcheon in 1995-98, had 218 career tackles, with 36 deflections and 6 interceptions. He started 48 games. As a 2018 senior, he made All-Pac-12 second team and played in the Senior Bowl.
Tell is the sixth USC safety drafted in the last 11 years, along with Kevin Ellison (2009), Taylor Mays (2010), T.J. McDonald (2013), Josh Shaw (2015) and Leon McQuay III (2017). He also is the fourth Trojan selected by the Colts since 2010, joining Kevin Thomas (2010), Khaled Holmes (2013) and Zach Banner (2017).
Tell was a 3-year starter at free safety for the Trojans. He had 221 career tackles, 13 deflections and 5 interceptions while starting 39 times. He was All-Pac-12 honorable mention and played in the Senior Bowl in 2018.
Smith is the first Trojan drafted by the Vikings since Matt Kalil and Rhett Ellison in 2012. He becomes the 14th USC linebacker drafted since 2007 (Dallas Sartz and Oscar Lua in 2007, Keith Rivers and Thomas Williams in 2008, Brian Cushing, Clay Matthews, Rey Maualuga and Kaluka Maiava in 2009, Malcolm Smith in 2011, Devon Kennard in 2014, Hayes Pullard in 2015, Su'a Cravens in 2016 and Uchenna Nwosu in 2018).
Smith, a 4-year starting inside linebacker at USC, was the first Trojan since Dennis Johnson in 1977-79 to lead Troy in tackles for 3 consecutive seasons.  He had 354 career stops (26.5 for losses) along with 14 deflections and 4 interceptions while making 44 starts. In 2018, he made All-Pac-12 second team, was a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, was USC's team MVP and played in the Senior Bowl.
USC and Michigan are the only schools with an NFL draftee every year since 1939. USC is tied with Ohio State for most NFL first round picks (81) and tied with Notre Dame for most No. 1 picks (5). USC and Oklahoma are the only schools with the draft's top selections in consecutive years.
