Owens Takes The First-Day Decathlon Lead At The Bryan Clay Invitational

Trojan freshman sets three PRs
Ayden Owens has the first-day lead in the decathlon at the Bryan Clay Invitational held at Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif. today (April 17).  The USC freshman scored 4,266 points and will take a 74-point lead over defending Pac-12 champion Harrison Williams into tomorrow's action. Owens set three PRs during today's competition.

- Owens opened his day with a PR of 10.43 (+1.1) in the men's 100m dash. He won that event and scored 992 points, 82 points better than the second decathlon runner.
- Owens then had a long jump PR of 24-8.50/7.53m (+1.0) to finish second in the event and score 942 more points. After two events he had 1,934 points and a 102-point lead.
- The third event was the decathlon shot put and Owens had a best mark of 44-0.00 (13.41m) in his final attempt, good for 692 points. He finished eighth in that event and after three completed events, he had 2,626 points and remained in the lead by 68 points.
- Owens had a best clearance of 6-2.75 (1.90m) in the high jump to earn 714 points. He finished tied for seventh in the event and after four events he led with 3,340 points.
- Owens closed the first day's action by winning the 400m dash with a PR of 47.66 which earned him 926 points.
