The Trojans were determined to finish off the first week of Spring Football on a high note Saturday.
- USC head coach Clay Helton is proud of how the players handled the first week of practices went. "I really like how the kids are competing, the energy that's on the field, and I like how everyone's operating," Helton began. "It doesn't feel like we're putting in a new system right now. Guys are really ahead on both sides of the ball."
- Helton is very pleased with the new offensive scheme implemented by new USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell. "The biggest thing I was hoping for was simpler schemes that would produce us playing faster, and really not creating any hesitation, any confusion," he said. "From the quarterback position to the skill kids, you're not seeing busts and they're making really decisive decisions."
- One of Helton's many goals this spring is to instill belief in his players. "If it's a one on one situation, let's believe in our kids, let's put it up and let them make plays." Today's practice was a perfect example as rising junior tight end Josh Falo caught a jump ball for a touchdown.
- Rising sophomore wide receiver Devon Williams has been a strong performer in the first week of practice and Helton can sense his growing knowledge of the game. "Devon's doing a nice job because he knows what to do … there's clarity," Helton remarked. "He's just playing so much faster."
- Rising junior tailback Stephen Carr is another Trojan to watch for this spring, and Helton is excited about his playmaking thus far. "I thought he was phenomenal today … there was no chattering of the feet, he put one foot in the ground and exploded north. And that's the one thing that comes with confidence…The confidence is what I'm seeing from him now."
- When addressing current injuries and absences, Helton said rising redshirt senior cornerback Dominic Davis is expected to return to practice in the second or third week of Spring Football and freshman safety Briton Allen, who was out due to hip soreness, is expected to return after spring break as well.
- Helton also confirmed that rising redshirt sophomore cornerback Greg Johnson has withdrawn his name from the transfer portal.
- The Trojans will take a week off for spring break and will resume practice on Tuesday, March 19, at 3:15 p.m. Every spring practice is free and open to the public.
