Both athletes post USC all-time top 10 marks, lead the country
USC's Alyssa Brewer was named the Pac-12 Women's Track Athlete of the Week and Matthew Katnik was named the Pac-12 Men's Field Athlete of the Week for the week of March 18-24, it was announced by the Conference today (March 26).
The freshman Brewer won the 800m race with a PR and NCAA-leading time of 2:04.93 at the Power 5 Trailblazer Challenge in Miami, Fla. on March 23. Brewer's time moved her into seventh place on USC's all-time women's top 10 in the 800m and it was the fastest time by a Trojan woman in the event since 2001. Brewer also anchored USC's 4x400m relay which ran 3:39.71 which ranks 12th in the country this season.
Brewer becomes the first USC men's or woman's distance/middle distance runner to earn a Pac-12 Athlete of the Week honor since Zsofia Erdelyi in 2008. Brewer is a Biological Sciences major.
The redshirt junior Katnik won the shot put with a PR and NCAA-leading throw of 64-6.50 (19.67m) at the Power 5 Trailblazer Challenge in Miami, Fla. on March 22. Katnik, who this year earned All-America honors indoors in the shot put by placing seventh, moved from seventh to fifth on USC's all-time outdoor shot put list. His mark of 64-6.50 is the farthest by a Trojan since Noah Bryant set the school record with a throw of 67-5.50 in 2007.
This is Katnik's second career and second consecutive Pac-12 Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor. He is a Business Administration major.
